Moving on….

While deciding what blog site is the best for you, I ask you to consider this new site I found. http://www.21classes.com/

I like the way it is both a portal and a blogging site and how it allows you to easily add student blogs that are connected to your Portal… no email for students required.

If blogging is something you want to do with your students, sign up for a free account at http://www.21classes.com/ and play a little bit. I have found it to be fast, reliable and quite easy to use. I would be interested in learning what you think of it!!

Imagine all you could use this tool for! Surveys in your blog using google docs!

Using Google Docs, I managed to create a sample survey. The anwers will be compiled into a spread sheet on google docs.

See my survey http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pG031iHgqNpKyLF9iknK3EA

Imagine how you could use this with students! You can have them actually type in paragraphs or choose from a selection of answers. You could get their feed back and have it compiled for you. Simple as that!

If you would like to learn how to do it, please go to http://edc.carleton.ca/feedback/gforms.php but for specific instructions for SPS employees and how to avoid SPAM folder issues – see my modified version of the Carleton University “how to” sheet by going to create-your-own-electronic-survey !

Cheers!

This is the Sample Word Calendar I uploaded. If you can convert your files to PDF before uploading it might be best as that way – anyone can open your calendar not just people with WORD.Putting a Calendar into your BLOG.doc

A Calendar on your Blog?

I’ve tinkered with several widget for calendars and all of them caused me grief. So I went back to basics.

Earth Day – April 22nd

We have been working on pulling together some resources for Earth Day (April 22nd). In addition, this new sustainability website has been created in an effort to compile resources, lesson plans, activities and related links that cover the topics of waste reduction, water management, energy consumption, recycling, reusing, and reducing consumption. Please check it out! If you have sites to contribute, please email berthelotj@spsd.sk.ca

New Structure to Edublogs

Just wanted to keep you in the know as some aspects of Edublogs is changing and this may influence how you are able to blog in your classroom. From what I can see on the support forum, there are still some issues with the changes and you might want to test your applications before you use them in the classroom. It appears that students WILL need email addresses in order to use blogs but they are still working out the blips!

G’day Edublogger,

Please excuse another email coming so soon after the last one but we’re piling on the new features thick and fast at the moment!

This week we’d like to introduce our new forums features and also let you know that students can now use Edublogs.org too.

The forums are really easy, all you have to do is visit Options > Forums when you’re logged in and create a forum (it takes about 10 seconds!). Then just copy and paste the page code provided into a post or a page and.. hey presto, you can host your very own forums that easily!

It’s a brilliantly simple way to have whole class discussions, provide great Q & A facilities or get your colleagues together on one space.

And what’s more now you don’t have to worry about whether your students should use learnerblogs, uniblogs or eslblogs – as Edublogs.org is now open to everyone – which means that your students can really easily participate in your forums as you can all sign up to the one advertising free site.

There’s more information here: http://edublogs.org/2008/02/26/come-together-and-chat-on-our-new-forums/

Thanks for taking the time to read this email and apologies again for any intrusion.

Cheers, James Farmer

Ohhh Goody – Some Blogging Gifts ….

Happy Holidays and all the best for 2008! Edublogs has given us bloggers a few gifts (and a few glitches to go along with them) this year. Please see their entire note about the gifts on your admin page. But to give you a little hint ….

Merry Christmas from edublogs

December 17th, 2007
Christmas comes early at edublogs this year, partly because the day itself isn’t much known for teaching and learning ;) , partly because we want to give the team a break… and partly because we just wanna spread some cheer!

So, as of today you should have, available in your edublog:

  • A snazzy new editor option (click it to get more editing options :)   (there are a few new options that will please you in the new expanded tool bar)
  • Tags for every post (and also on every theme!) – tag clouds for your sidebars etc. all coming soon
  • Ten swanky new themes to choose from (please note there are some issues with the new themes – so read the notice from edublogs before trying any of them)

So fellow bloggers, have a look at all the goodies and play a little over the holiday season ….

Cheers from the Team at the OLC!!
